Hi, I'm new here but I've been watching for awhile. It's a great place with knowledgeable people willing to share. I've learned alot already

I do have a question. I've been putting the nut of my classical guitars on the headplate side of the fingerboard. Then I trim the bottom of the nut to 15 degrees to make it all fit. I just cut two blanks and made them 1/4" longer so I could put the nut on the fingerboard plane. Does that sound ok or should I go back to the old method?

Thanks for the help.....

Joe

I put the nut on the FB plane like you are talking about. You are right on with the extra 1/4". I was taught to build this way and I like the look. Both ways work, but this is my preference.

Hesh, if you place the nut on the fingboard plane you have to compensate for it by adding a 1/4" (If that is your prefered nut size) to the length of the neck blank so that your 14th or 12th fret line up at the body joint, dont ask me how I know this

If you dont, and you lay out the fretboard and then place the nut on the fretboard, it will push your 14th fret toward the sound hole by the width of your nut.

Thank you for the great replies.... After I cut the finger board 1/4 longer and put the headplate and fingerboard on I started having second thoughts. After reading your replies I'll charge forward and finish it as planned. I can look it over then and make a decision as to which I want to do in the future...Thanks again.

Me, too....I like to place mine on the FB....easier I guess. I don't have to mess around withg the angle on the bottom of the nut. But both ways will work just fine. Its up to what you prefer!

I think I've said it here before but for slot-heads I put the nut on the fingerboard plane and for solid heads I put the nut on the headstock with the angle. Don't ask for logic it's just the way I've always done it.
